Good evening everyone. I am Tom Niklas, a seasoned writer and reviewer. Today, I am honored to share with you my thoughts and takeaways from the book ”Emotional Intelligence for Sales Success“. I am certain that even if you are not a salesperson, this book will provide profound insights to enrich your life, as enhancing emotional intelligence is an invaluable life skill for us all to facilitate comprehending ourselves, managing relationships and accomplishing dual success in work and life.
What then, is emotional intelligence? In simple terms, it is the ability to handle one’s own and others’ emotions. However, to truly understand emotional intelligence, we must examine it on two levels — brain structure and psychological regulation.
On the brain structure level, regions like the amygdala, limbic system and prefrontal cortex are involved in emotional processing. The amygdala generates basic emotions, the limbic system forms emotions, and the prefrontal cortex regulates emotions. Hence, our emotions are complex physiological activities.
On the psychological regulation level, emotional intelligence encompasses four elements — self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management. Self-awareness is perceiving one’s own emotions, self-management is the ability to control emotions, social awareness is comprehending others’ emotions, and relationship management is responding based on others’ emotions.
An example is renowned swimmer Michael Phelps. He won championships relying on physiological advantages, but his emotional control during competitions was also paramount. Once his goggles broke but he remained composed and set a world record. This shows success stems not just from talent, but requires emotional intelligence as well.
